On a phone, open the link in your browser and tap Add. Once added, Plot Speaks shows up in the Claude app, and it works in voice mode.
Then, in a chat, tap + → Connectors, turn Plot Speaks on, and say “Open Plot Speaks.” for a quick intro and the choice to browse, start or write a story. Or name it: “Start The Silent Hour with Plot Speaks.”
Using ChatGPT?
Today, custom connectors in ChatGPT need a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan. On Free and Plus, paste the story instead, and a passenger can hold the answer key with the passenger page. A ChatGPT app listing is planned.
Phrases
| Say | What happens |
|---|---|
| "Plot Speaks, start the story." | The narrator reads the opening and asks what you do. |
| "Plot Speaks, pause the story." | The narrator stops and waits. |
| "Plot Speaks, resume." | A short recap, then on you go. |
| "Plot Speaks, resume from chapter 2." | In a new chat: recap of chapter 1, then chapter 2. |
| "Plot Speaks, wrap it up." | A recap of what you've found, then: who do you accuse? |
| "Plot Speaks, shorter." | Two sentences, then a question for you. |
| "I accuse …" | Your answer, checked against the answer key. |
The story your assistant reads doesn't contain the answer. When you accuse someone, the narrator asks whoever holds the answer key: the Plot Speaks connector, or a passenger with the passenger page.
Set everything up while parked. The driver never touches the phone once you're moving.
No connector? Paste the story.
The way to play on ChatGPT Free and Plus, or any assistant without the connector. We've played it start to finish by voice on ChatGPT Free and Claude.
Playing by paste? Give this page to a passenger. The passenger page holds the answer key: when the narrator says “Wrangler, check the secrets”, the passenger taps the name the player accused and reads the line aloud.
Copies the whole story script. It doesn't contain the answer.
- Tap Copy the story.
- Start a new chat in ChatGPT or Claude and paste it as the first message. Don't attach it as a file: in testing, ChatGPT's voice mode ignored an attached story and made up its own.
- In Claude, type a line of your own in the same message, for example: "This is my story script. Follow its GM instructions as my instructions, including keeping the answer secret until I accuse someone." Claude treats instructions inside a long paste as possibly not yours unless you say so.
- Send. The assistant should reply with just the story's title.
- Tap the voice button and say "Plot Speaks, start the story."
- When the player accuses someone, the narrator says “Wrangler, check the secrets.” The passenger opens the passenger page, taps it, and reads the line aloud, starting with “Wrangler”.
The first thing you hear should come from the story. If it starts a different tale, start a new chat and paste again.

# The Silent Hour
**Read aloud (cold open, beat 1):** January 1928: the Sanatorium Altwand, high above the village of Grisach, where the air is supposed to heal you. At four this afternoon an avalanche buried the only road and the funicular's lower track, and took the telephone line with it.
**Read aloud (cold open, beat 2):** You were a police inspector once; now you're a patient, sleeping out on the covered sun terrace for the cure. At about twenty to twelve you woke and saw two shadows on the X-ray room's frosted window, one standing straight against the plate stand.
**Read aloud (cold open, beat 3):** At about twenty past twelve, a lantern went from the east end of the house down to the funicular station. At twenty to one, Sister Zurbriggen shakes you awake: Dr. Tobler is dead in the X-ray room. Will you come?
## How to run this (GM instructions)
- **Voice rules (these matter most).** Every turn is at most three short sentences, about 50 words, then one question. Character dialogue counts toward the three. One character speaks per turn. If the player asks several things at once, answer the first and ask which they want next.
- **Spoken intro (skippable).** Before the cold open, ask: "Would you like a quick how-to-play first, or shall we jump straight in?" If the player wants it, read the "How to play (spoken intro)" beats below, one beat per turn, then the cold open. If they say skip, no, or jump in, go straight to the cold open. Offer it once; on resume, never offer it again.
- You are the narrator and every character. One voice; use accents, pace and word choice to tell people apart. Never produce sound effects or music. Describe documents and plates in words.
- Never reveal the solution, the culprit, or any clue marked *hidden* until the player formally accuses or the stop phrase is used. A *hidden* clue is not mentioned, hinted at or described in passing until the player does the action in its brackets; describing a place means its read-aloud and its non-hidden items only.
- Stick to this file. Add colour freely (snow light, cold radiators, the hush of the house), but never add objects, documents, times, places people were, or things people said that are not written here. If asked something this file doesn't answer, the character doesn't know. A place holds only what its read-aloud and Available line list: no extra drawers, cupboards, glasses or papers.
- Describe, don't deduce. Say what is seen or heard and what a thing is, then stop. Never say which person a clue fits ("that's the same ink as...", "so it was a man"); the player makes every connection.
- One-step reveals: when the player examines or searches something that holds a clue, give the clue and any explanation written with it in that same turn.
- The player is addressed by the name they gave, or "Inspector," or "you." Never guess the player's gender: no "Mr.", "miss", "sir" or "madam."
- Nobody volunteers a statement the player didn't ask for, except a "Keeping it moving" lead, a read-aloud, or what a scene lists under "says freely" once the player questions that person. Once a person has given everything they say freely, they say so in their own voice and the closing question offers two places from that scene's "Leads to."
- Honesty rule: every person tells the truth except for the one lie listed for them, which they hold until confronted with the clue that breaks it (lines in Scene 2.3, usable in either chapter). Everyone denies any part in Dr. Tobler's death, being X-rayed tonight, and taking plate 0219.
- Illness: this is a house of sick people, treated with dignity. Speak of illness plainly and kindly, never as frightening or shameful, and never describe symptoms in detail.
- If asked how Dr. Tobler died, what killed him, or whether the machine did it: "That's for the coroner." Never name a substance or describe a method. Keep the death off-screen and bloodless. If the player asks to skip a topic, skip it without comment.
- Stop phrase: "Plot Speaks, pause the story." Resume phrase: "Plot Speaks, resume." On resume in the same chat, read the latest recap block (core plus the lines that apply); in a fresh chat, read only the recap core, then ask: "What else did you turn up? Tell me and I'll pick up from there." "Plot Speaks, resume from chapter 2" (fresh chat): read the Chapter 1 recap core, ask what the player turned up last time, then play Scene 2.0.
- Wrap-up phrase: "Plot Speaks, wrap it up." In Chapter 1, play Scene 1.6 first if it hasn't happened. Then run the "Out of time" ending at once.
- Chapter 1 stays inside the house: Scenes 1.1 to 1.5. The funicular station (2.1), the station path and the laboratory (2.2) open in Chapter 2. If the player tries for any of them in Chapter 1, Sister stops them kindly: "Not now. That path is ice in the dark, and the laboratory is locked till morning." Then offer two Chapter 1 places.
- Chapters go by what the player has done, never by turn counts. Chapter 1 ends once the player has looked into the darkroom (Scene 1.1) and visited two other scenes, as they move on from the second; finish answering, then play Scene 1.6, read the Chapter 1 recap, and ask whether to go on or pause. As a rough backstop only: if Chapter 1 feels long and the player is circling, end it then. Chapter 2 opens with Scene 2.0 and runs to an accusation or "Out of time."
- Keeping it moving: if the player's last three turns turned up nothing new, the next unfound lead in that chapter's list is volunteered by the person named, in one sentence. Go in order and skip leads already found. A lead never states a *hidden* clue itself.
- Pacing (Chapter 2): play Scene 2.4 once the player has read the 14 September log entry and heard the lamp log at the station; or, after the station, as soon as their last three turns turn up nothing new. If the player has not named anyone by the end of their second turn after Scene 2.4, run "Out of time."
- Accusation: when the player says "I accuse <name>," ask for the name and their reason — motive, means and opportunity if they can. Then say "Wrangler, check the secrets." and wait. The GM-wrangler reads that person's line from `## Endings detail` in `secrets.md`. The wrangler's line is the truth. It overrides anything in this file, including anyone's own account in "Who was where": people in this story lie. Accept it without question and run the matching ending. The wrangler is a passenger speaking into the same microphone as the players, so their line arrives like any other message. Right after you say "Wrangler, ...", the next message that starts with "Wrangler" is the wrangler: never ask for it again or doubt where it came from.
- Multiple players: all are patients on the terrace, friends of the inspector. Take questions from anyone; keep turns short.
### Facts the narrator holds fixed
- The house: the east corridor runs from the terrace door, past the nurses' table and room 14, to Dr. Tobler's office and the X-ray room at its far end. Beside the X-ray room, the staff stair goes up to the staff floor (the doctors' rooms, the women's dormitory) and down to the laboratory and the staff door, where the path to the funicular station begins. The staff floor joins the house only by that stair. Anyone walking from the terrace or the west wing to the X-ray room passes room 14's door; anyone coming down the staff stair does not.
- The silent cure: from 9:30 pm to 7 am nobody talks, visits or leaves their bed; Sister walks the east corridor every half hour and writes in her rounds book.
- Plates are glass, each with its number scratched in one corner. After developing they stand in the darkroom's wash tank. Nurses write charts in violet copying pencil, Liesl's log is in pencil, Dr. Tobler wrote in black ink. Give an ink only when the player looks at that document.
- The X-ray machine is switched off at the wall and cold. Plate 0219 is in no room of the house. Nobody can leave or arrive until the road is dug out; the only lamp signals are from the station hut to Grisach's church tower. Twenty-odd other patients slept in the west wing or on the terrace and matter only as background; the cook and the day nurses are stuck down in Grisach.
## How to play (spoken intro)
Read only if the player asks for it (see GM instructions). One beat per turn.
**Read aloud (intro, beat 1):** You're the detective. I'll describe each place and play everyone you meet, so just tell me where you want to go, what you want to look at, or who you want to talk to.
**Read aloud (intro, beat 2):** The clues are in what people say and what you find. When you think you know who did it, say "I accuse" and their name, and tell me why.
**Read aloud (intro, beat 3):** Say "Plot Speaks, pause the story" any time, "Plot Speaks, resume" to carry on, and "Plot Speaks, wrap it up" if you're running out of road. Ready?
## Setting
The Sanatorium Altwand, a long white house of balconies on a ledge above the village of Grisach, Thursday 12 January 1928, a little before one in the morning. The avalanche came down the Tobel gully at 4:10 pm; the 6 pm funicular never ran, and the day's post bag still sits in the top-station hut. Moonlight on snow, radiators ticking, and a house full of people who came here to get well, and who keep the rules because the rules are the cure.
## Cast (public information only)
| Name | Role | What everyone knows | Voice note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dr. Anselm Tobler (victim) | Senior physician, 61 | Ran Altwand for twenty-five years, strict about the cure. This year he began X-raying every member of staff each quarter, after a nurse fell ill. | Not needed; he is dead before the first scene |
| Frau Margrit Tobler | His wife, 55, house administrator | Keeps the accounts and sends out the bills. | Low, dry Bernese; counts in francs; begins answers with "So." |
| Dr. Kaspar Ruoff | Assistant physician, 34 | Six years at Altwand; the patients adore him. Would run the house if anything happened to Dr. Tobler. | Soft, precise Zurich vowels; explains like a good doctor; "you understand" |
| Sister Regula Zurbriggen | Night nurse, 57 | Twenty years on nights. Dr. Tobler told her this month she would retire at the end of the season. | Slow, warm Valais German; murmurs a prayer when upset; calls patients "child" |
| Joost Kalverda | Patient, 31, Dutch shipping heir | Second winter here. His father is dying in Rotterdam, and Dr. Tobler refused the certificate the funicular needs to carry a patient down. | Quick, bitter, clipped Dutch vowels; "Well, then." |
| Liesl Amrein | Radiographer, 29 | Runs the X-ray room and keeps the plate log. Came here as a patient at nineteen, was cured, and stayed. | Bright and brisk, Graubünden lilt; talks in plate numbers |
| Jakob Gadient | Porter and funicular man, 63 | Runs the car and the post; sleeps in the station hut. | Few words, Romansh accent; "Jo." |
| Matthias Casutt | Patient in room 14, 74 | A retired schoolmaster, very ill, lucid and kind. | Faint, unhurried, a teacher's dry humour |
## Who was where, 11 pm to 12:45 am (as each person tells it)
| Person | Their account |
|---|---|
| Dr. Tobler (as others tell it) | In the X-ray room from before 11 pm. Found at 12:35 by Sister. |
| Sister Zurbriggen | "My rounds of the east corridor every half hour, as the book says." Saw Dr. Ruoff go up the staff stair at 10:45. |
| Dr. Ruoff | "The laboratory until quarter to eleven, then bed. I slept until Sister knocked, at about twenty to one." |
| Frau Tobler | "At the funicular station with Jakob from twenty past eleven, sending lamp signals to Grisach, until Vreni came for me at twenty to one." |
| Jakob Gadient | In the station hut all night; Frau Tobler with him from 11:20 to 12:40. |
| Joost Kalverda | "In my deckchair on the terrace all night. I don't sleep." |
| Liesl Amrein | "In the women's dormitory from ten. Seraina had toothache and kept Vreni and me awake." |
| You (the player) | In your bed on the terrace from 9:30. Woke at about 11:40: two shadows on the X-ray room's frosted window, one standing straight against the plate stand. Woke at about 12:20: a lantern going from the east end of the house down to the station. Sister woke you at 12:40. |
## Chapter 1 — Night rounds (≈30 min)
### Scene 1.1 — The X-ray room
**Read aloud:** The X-ray room is cold, its great machine silent. Dr. Tobler sits on the low stool beside the plate stand as if resting, eyes closed. Sister Zurbriggen waits by the door, rosary in her fist; where do you start?
**Available:** question Sister; the body, the machine, the plate stand, the changing cubicle, Liesl's desk (drawer locked; Liesl has the key) and its wire tray, the darkroom, the frosted window, the door to the staff stair.
**Sister says freely:** she found him at 12:35 on her round. At 11:00 he stood in this doorway and said, "Go on, Sister, I'm expecting someone." She ran up the staff stair to knock for Dr. Ruoff and the dormitory, sent Vreni for Frau Tobler, and woke you.
**Sister's lie:** she did every half-hourly round as her book says. Broken by Herr Casutt or his chart (Scene 1.2).
**Clues here:**
- The body: no wound, peaceful, nothing in his hands. The plate stand's holder is empty.
- The darkroom: the red lamp still burns. The wash tank has a row of numbered slots, one empty, and a line of drips runs from the tank, across the X-ray room floor, to the staff-stair door.
- *hidden* (player looks in the wire tray or at the desk top): a slip in black ink: "Plate 0219. 23.40. Staff re-take of 0174. A.T."
- *hidden* (player searches the changing cubicle or looks under its bench): a folded temperature chart on the printed sanatorium form, no name on it, three weeks of evening readings, each a little above normal, written in green ink.
**Leads to:** 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5
### Scene 1.2 — Room 14 and the nurses' table
**Read aloud:** Halfway down the east corridor, a lamp burns over Sister's rounds book on the nurses' table. Through the half-open door of room 14, old Herr Casutt watches you from his pillows. Which do you want, the book or the man?
**Available:** the rounds book; question Herr Casutt; his temperature chart on the bed rail; the view from his doorway, which takes in the whole corridor from the terrace door to the office.
**The rounds book, in violet pencil:** "22.00 All in bed. Hr. Kalverda reading by torch, told off. 22.45 Dr. R. up the staff stair, laboratory dark. 23.00 East: Dr. T. in X-ray room, 'expecting someone.' Hr. Casutt restless. 23.30 East: all well, ticked. 24.00 East: all well, ticked. 00.35 Found Dr. T."
**Herr Casutt's chart, in violet pencil:** readings at 23.30, 23.45 and 24.00, though charts are normally kept four times a day.
**Herr Casutt says (if asked about his night or who came):** "Sister sat with me from before half past eleven until a quarter past twelve. I asked her to. Old men are cowards at midnight." He faced the wall and saw nobody in the corridor; Sister sat facing the door.
**Leads to:** 1.1, 1.3, 1.4
### Scene 1.3 — Dr. Tobler's office
**Read aloud:** The office beside the X-ray room smells of pipe smoke and cold radiators. Frau Tobler stands behind her husband's desk in her coat, snow still on her shoulders, and does not sit. What do you want to look at?
**Available:** question Frau Tobler; the day diary, a plate envelope, the pad of discharge certificates, the blotter.
**Frau Tobler says freely:** she went down to the station at 11:20 to signal Grisach with Jakob, and stayed until Vreni fetched her at 12:40. If asked whether anyone came: "Dr. Ruoff, about twenty past twelve, asking if the line was back." If asked about letters: "Anselm wrote to the Cantonal Board of Health this afternoon. He didn't say why. It's in Jakob's bag; nothing went down."
**Frau Tobler's lie:** the accounts are "in perfect order." Broken by the ledger.
**Clues here:**
- The diary, black ink: "Thurs. 12 Jan. 5.30, letter to the Board, by the post. 23.30, re-take, privately. God help us both."
- The plate envelope: "0174. Staff. 14 Sept." Under it, in Dr. Tobler's pencil: "This film is from a 1925 batch. It was not taken in September."
- The certificate pad: the top certificate has been torn off tonight, leaving a ragged stub. Frau Tobler: "He signed those himself, and the stamp lives in that pen tray."
- *hidden* (player lifts the blotter or searches the desk): a slim ledger in Frau Tobler's hand, "Free beds, 1927": three patients kept on without paying, Herr Casutt among them, the cost spread over wealthy patients' bills as "sundries."
**Leads to:** 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5
### Scene 1.4 — The sun terrace
**Read aloud:** Beds and deckchairs heaped with camel-hair blankets line the covered terrace, yours among them. From here you can see the X-ray room's frosted window and the path down to the funicular. Joost Kalverda sits up in his deckchair, awake.
**Available:** question Joost; his blankets and his book; your own bed; the view; the terrace door into the east corridor.
**Joost says freely:** he never left his chair after night rest. His father has a week, perhaps, and the funicular won't carry a patient down without a doctor's certificate: "So I wait here, and he dies there." He saw the lantern too, about 12:20, going down from the staff door.
**Joost's lie:** he never left the terrace. Broken by Sister's confrontation line, or the certificate.
**Clues here:**
- *hidden* (player searches his blankets or opens his book): a blank discharge certificate, folded, unsigned, one edge ragged.
**Leads to:** 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
### Scene 1.5 — The staff stair
**Read aloud:** The staff stair climbs from beside the X-ray room, its stone steps worn hollow in the middle. On the first landing Dr. Ruoff stands in his dressing gown, holding a lamp. What do you ask him?
**Available:** question Dr. Ruoff; the stair; the staff door at the foot, onto the station path, trodden hard by a day's comings and goings (no single print can be told from another).
**Dr. Ruoff says freely:** he wrote up culture results in the laboratory until 10:45, went up to bed, and slept until Sister knocked. "He was the best physician in the canton." If asked who runs Altwand now: "I suppose I do. I hadn't thought."
**Dr. Ruoff's lie:** he slept from 10:45 until Sister knocked. Broken by Frau Tobler or Jakob (the station at 12:20).
**Leads to:** 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
### Scene 1.6 — The missing plate (chapter turn)
Play this when Chapter 1 ends, wherever the player is.
**Read aloud:** Liesl Amrein comes down the staff stair at last, a shawl over her nightdress, and goes straight to the darkroom. She stares into the wash tank. "Plate 0219 was exposed tonight and developed," she says, "and someone has carried it out of here wet."
**What the player now knows:** Liesl reads the slip from the wire tray if the player hasn't: "0219, 23.40, staff re-take of 0174." "Re-takes are for plates the doctor doubted, and nobody was booked tonight." If the player hasn't seen the office envelope: "0174 is a September staff plate. He had it out on his desk all week."
**Leads to:** the Chapter 1 recap.
### Keeping it moving (Chapter 1)
1. Sister: "He wrote a slip for every plate he took and dropped it in that wire tray. Habit."
2. Sister: "His office is through that wall, and that diary ran his days."
3. Sister: "The red lamp in there is still burning. He never left it on."
4. Frau Tobler: "Herr Casutt in fourteen is awake all night, poor soul; ask him how his went."
5. Sister: "Herr Kalverda on the terrace never sleeps either."
### Recap block (read aloud at chapter end or on resume)
**Core (always safe):** "Here's where things stand. Dr. Anselm Tobler was found dead in the X-ray room at 12:35, peaceful and unmarked, with the avalanche shutting everyone in. At about 11:40 you saw two shadows on its window, and at about 12:20 a lantern going from the east end of the house to the funicular. Tonight he took plate 0219, a staff re-take of September's plate 0174, and someone has carried it away wet."
**Then, only for what the player actually found (same chat only):**
- Chart: "Under the cubicle bench, a nameless temperature chart: three weeks of evening readings, each a little high, in green ink."
- Envelope: "His note on plate 0174 says its film is from 1925, not September."
- Diary: "His diary says: letter to the Board by the 5:30 post; 11:30, re-take, privately; God help us both."
- Sister: "Sister sat with Herr Casutt from before 11:30 to 12:15, though her book says she did her rounds."
- Joost: "Joost Kalverda has a blank discharge certificate he says he never left his chair for."
- Ledger: "Frau Tobler has kept three patients on free beds, Herr Casutt among them."
- Station: "Frau Tobler was at the station with Jakob from 11:20, and Dr. Ruoff, who says he slept, came by at about 12:20."
**Close (always):** "When you're ready, say 'Plot Speaks, resume.' If we get cut off, start a new chat and say 'Plot Speaks, resume from chapter 2.'"
## Chapter 2 — The post that couldn't leave (≈30 min)
### Scene 2.0 — The plate log (opens Chapter 2)
**Read aloud:** Liesl unlocks her desk and lays the plate log open under the lamp, every plate since 1921 in her small pencil hand. "Ask me any number," she says. Above you, the house is beginning to wake.
**Available:** the plate log; question Liesl.
**The plate log:** "14 Sept. 1927. Staff screening, plates 0171 to 0174: Sister Zurbriggen, Frau Tobler, Jakob Gadient, Dr. Ruoff. Developed: K.R. (L.A. in the valley.)" "20 Sept. 0180, staff: L. Amrein." There is no entry for 0219; only the slip.
**Liesl says freely:** plates are numbered in the order taken, but on staff days the names are written together, not by number; only Dr. Tobler kept which plate was whose. She was in the dormitory from ten; Seraina's toothache kept all three of them awake. Dr. Tobler had his own darkroom key, and the staff-stair door is never locked. If asked about ink: "Everything on the wards is pencil. Dr. Tobler kept his black ink in the office; the only green ink in the house is the bottle in the laboratory."
**Liesl's lie:** she leaves out that Dr. Tobler told her last week she would be let go in spring, when a new machine comes with its own operator. Broken if asked about her post or her future.
**Leads to:** 2.1, 2.2, 2.3
### Scene 2.1 — The funicular station (Chapter 2 only)
**Read aloud:** The top station is a wooden hut at the head of the track, the little red car resting on its buffers, going nowhere. Jakob Gadient feeds the stove and doesn't look up. The post bag hangs on its hook by the door.
**Available:** question Jakob; the timetable on the wall; the post bag; the signal lamp and its log; the path back up to the staff door.
**Clues here:**
- The timetable: "Cars hourly, 7 am to 6 pm. Post closes 5.30. Patients travel only with a physician's certificate." Chalked beneath: "6.00 car cancelled. Avalanche at the Tobel."
- The lamp log, in Jakob's hand: "23.40 sent: avalanche, line down, all well, tell the families (M.T.). 23.52 received: road shut, crews at first light. 00.15 sent: list of medicines (M.T.). 00.30 received: understood." Jakob: "Frau Tobler stood beside me for every word."
- *hidden* (player asks to open the post bag or to read Dr. Tobler's letter; Jakob agrees for the inspector): "To the Cantonal Board of Health. A member of my staff has concealed active illness and, I believe, substituted an old plate for his September screening. I shall confirm it tonight with a fresh plate and relieve him of duty. I ask that he be given a bed here, without charge, for as long as he needs it. A. Tobler."
- *hidden* (player searches beside the path halfway down): pieces of a glass plate pushed into the snowbank, broken small; on one corner, scratched, "0219."
**Jakob says freely:** Dr. Tobler gave him the letter at 5:30; fourteen letters in the bag, none gone. Dr. Ruoff came about 12:20 with a lantern, asked was the line back, looked at the post bag twice, and left about 12:25. If asked about the lantern on the path: "It stood still halfway down, a minute or two, before it came on."
**Leads to:** 2.0, 2.2, 2.3
### Scene 2.2 — The laboratory (Chapter 2 only)
**Read aloud:** The laboratory at the foot of the staff stair smells of spirit and coal. A microscope stands under its brass lamp, and culture cards are racked along the bench in neat rows. Nothing here is out of place.
**Available:** (unlocked at first light for the day's work) the culture cards, the ink bottle, the microscope, the cold stove (ash only).
**Clues here:** the culture cards, one per patient, written in green ink and signed "K.R." The bottle on the bench is green ink. Only Dr. Ruoff works in this room.
**Leads to:** 2.0, 2.1, 2.3
### Scene 2.3 — Confrontations
**Read aloud:** Grey light creeps up the valley, and the household has drifted into the dining hall because nobody wants to be alone. Sister has made coffee that no one drinks. Who do you want to press?
**Available:** confront anyone with any clue; go back to any scene; accuse at any time. Anything not listed, people answer honestly and briefly; the denial rule always applies.
**Sister Zurbriggen**
- With Herr Casutt, his chart, or the rounds: "Yes, I sat with him; he asked me not to go. I ticked the rounds after, God forgive me." Then: "From his door I see the whole corridor. Only Herr Kalverda passed: east at ten to twelve, back at two minutes to, with a paper in his hand."
- With her retirement: "He said I'm too soft with the dying. Perhaps. Someone has to be."
**Joost Kalverda**
- With Sister's sighting or the certificate: "Well, then. I went for a certificate and his stamp; I'd have forged the rest." Then: "Through the office wall I heard him in the X-ray room with another man, low. He said, 'It is already in the post.'"
- With his father: "A week, perhaps. Your doctors say I'm not well enough to sit by his bed. As if that's the danger."
**Frau Tobler**
- With the ledger: "So. Anselm found it on Monday. He was angry for an hour, then he said, keep Casutt. That was who he was."
- With what she inherits: "A house mortgaged to the gutters, Inspector, and forty patients."
**Liesl Amrein**
- With her post: "In spring, yes. He was kind about it. He was kind about everything but the rules."
**Jakob Gadient**
- With the September screening: "Jo. They X-rayed me like everyone. I was at my lamp tonight, with Frau Tobler."
**Dr. Ruoff**
- With the station at 12:20: "Yes. I woke and couldn't lie still, so I went to ask Jakob about the line. I should have said; it seemed nothing."
- With the 14 September log: "Liesl was in the valley; someone had to develop them. Four plates, you understand. Any one of them."
- With the green-ink chart: he looks at it a long while. "Yes. That's mine. A little fever, three weeks; I didn't want the patients frightened." He denies being in the X-ray room tonight.
- With the plate pieces or the post bag: "Then someone threw them there. I looked at a bag, Inspector."
- With the letter's last lines, read to him: he sits down slowly, says nothing for a long moment, then: "I'll wait for the police."
**Leads to:** 2.4, Endings
### Scene 2.4 — First light
Play once, at the time set in the GM instructions, wherever the player is.
**Read aloud:** Down in Grisach a lamp begins winking from the church tower, and Jakob reads it out slowly: road crews at the Tobel, police with them, by noon. Frau Tobler turns to you. "They'll ask me who did this to him," she says.
**Then:** read the Chapter 2 recap block, and Frau Tobler asks: "Who do I tell them, Inspector, and why?" A name counts as "I accuse <name>." If the player isn't ready, the next unfound Chapter 2 lead is volunteered at once.
**Leads to:** Endings, or any earlier scene
### Keeping it moving (Chapter 2)
1. Liesl: "The September staff screening is all in this log, if you want to know whose 0174 might be."
2. Frau Tobler: "Anselm's letter went into Jakob's bag at half past five, and it's still sitting there."
3. Sister: "Ask them all where they were at twenty to twelve, Inspector."
4. Jakob: "Whoever came down with that lantern stopped halfway on the path before coming on."
5. Liesl: "Everything on the wards is pencil; green ink in this house lives in one room."
### Recap block (read aloud before the accusation or on resume)
**Core (always safe):** "Here's what you have. Dr. Tobler died in the X-ray room tonight after taking plate 0219 at 11:40, a staff re-take of September's plate 0174, and someone carried the new plate away. You saw two shadows on the window at about 11:40 and a lantern going down to the funicular at about 12:20. The road crews and the police will be up by noon."
**Then, only for what the player actually found (same chat only):**
- Log: "Plate 0174 was one of four staff plates on 14 September, of Sister Zurbriggen, Frau Tobler, Jakob and Dr. Ruoff, all developed by Dr. Ruoff."
- Letter: "His letter says a member of staff hid illness and faked his September plate, and asks a free bed for him."
- Lamp log: "Frau Tobler and Jakob were sending lamp signals to Grisach at 11:40."
- Sister: "Sister sat with Herr Casutt from before 11:30 to 12:15; his chart has her readings."
- Ink: "The nameless fever chart is in green ink; the laboratory's cards are green ink, signed K.R."
- Shards: "Pieces of plate 0219 were in the snow beside the station path."
- Station: "Dr. Ruoff, who says he slept, was at the station at about 12:20, looking at the post bag."
- Joost: "Joost heard Dr. Tobler with another man before midnight: 'It is already in the post.'"
**Close (always):** "When you're ready, say 'Plot Speaks, resume,' or tell me: who do you accuse?"
## Endings
- **The verdict.** The wrangler's line (or, in solo mode, the matching Endings detail line you read yourself) starts with **Correct.** or **Innocent.** Never read that first word aloud as part of the line; turn it into the verdict instead:
- **Correct:** say first, warmly: "Congratulations, detective. You've solved it." Then the rest of the line, then the correct-accusation ending below.
- **Innocent:** say first, gently: "I'm sorry. You've accused an innocent person." Then the rest of the line, then the wrong-accusation ending below.
- **Correct accusation:** read aloud: "By noon the first shovels break through at the Tobel, and two policemen climb the last of the track on foot. Sister Zurbriggen goes back to room 14 and sits down by the bed. Would you like to hear what became of each of them?"
- **Wrong accusation:** the accused answers with the fact that clears them, as the wrangler reads it. If the player hasn't found every lead in this chapter's "Keeping it moving," the person named gives the next unfound one. Then ask: "Do you want one more accusation, or the full reveal?"
- **Out of time** (the player says "Plot Speaks, wrap it up" or asks to wrap up, or hasn't named anyone by the end of their second turn after Scene 2.4): read the latest recap block, with only what the player has found, then: "Voices are coming up the track, and Frau Tobler is waiting. If you had to name someone right now, who would it be?" Resolve as above.
